Abbaye: biere de belgique (5.6%)

by DanCave on Jun.24, 2009, under Beer Reviews

The Sainsburys bought Abbaye: biere de belgique “premium continental” blone beer looks like it might have been an own brand beer. The “preiumium contental” label makes it sound cheap and possably a rip off.

The label claims it is a rich tasting beer full of sweet, biscuity, malt flavors and a refreshing bitter hop finsish. We shall see!

A ounce of credibilty is clawed back with the cork top. Opening this like champaign makes you feel like it is quality beer, just by association with the champagine experience. But then comes the finishing blow on the back of the bottle… Bottled in france for sainsburys!

So fingers firmly crossed and beer pored, the first taste was not what I was expecting. It is Good!

The bottle didn’t lie, it’s very slightly warming, very buiscuity and malty. Its like biscuity ovaltine beer. It is not a complex Beer though,  you get the full flavor of the beer upfront and it doesnt go anywhere, change or even have a particularly different after taste.

The beer could be a bit more hoppy for my taste and a bit more subtle, but thats just me. This is a very competant beer deserving of a place in your easy drinking section. If there is such thing as comfort drink (the same as comfort food but wet!) then this might be it.

The bottle is too big to drink all by myself and is probably meant for sharing. The more you drink the sweeter the beer becomes too, this can become a bit of a put off. If you are going to by this, definatly get a friend to drink it with.
